For those that might be interested in Weather Alert radios,
here is some information on the
National Weather Radio alert system
NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) is a nationwide network
of transmitters broadcasting continuous weather information
direct from a nearby National Weather Service office.
NWR broadcasts National Weather Service warnings, watches,
forecasts, and other hazard information 24 hours a day.
When an NWS office broadcasts a warning, watch, or non-weather emergency,
it also broadcasts a digital Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) code that may be heard as a very brief static burst depending on the characteristics of the receiver.
This SAME code contains the type of message, county(s) affected,
and message expiration time. You can program your receiver to only
respond to your local SAME code. Therefore, your receiver is muted until
a watch, warning, or alert is issued for your local area.
